What is the most interesting place you’ve ever traveled?
India. It’s the most complex place on the planet. You have castes, you have the very rich and the very poor. The South is tropical with the Himalayas to the North. There’s about 20 different ethnic groups but for the most part they speak the same language. It’s also very religiously diverse.
How many places have you traveled to?
About 29 in total, including South Asia, Canada, Pakistan, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Singapore, and the Philippines.
Why did you start teaching?
I taught math in the Philippines when I was nineteen, so I had already taught. I had done economics for 30 years and have a PhD from Harvard in economics. I turned down a teaching post at Amherst college, but teaching was always there for me.
Why did you decide to teach history?
I wanted to teach history at a college and I didn’t want to get another PhD, so that seemed like a good way to do it.
Do you enjoy teaching high school?
It has its plusses and minuses, but I don’t like the structure for AP students. They should give you more breaks. I wish I could do one lecture for 120 students instead of lecturing 30 students four times.
Where outside of the US have you spent the most time?
I spent 14 years in Indonesia, and I’ve been to the Philippines twice, once for eight months and the second time for three years.
Why did you decide to return to the US?
The issue wasn’t returning, it was the where, because I’d been away for so long, which delayed my return. I hated the organization that ran my last job.
Who do you think will win the Super Bowl?
