New summer reading policy

May 6, 2011 Adithi Krishnamoorthy

“Here’s some advice. Stay alive” is one of the themes of the book Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, the new mandatory summer assignment for the entire school.

This new policy was implemented to encourage community learning.

“The one book system is used in communities, colleges and schools across the nation,” English department chair Mary Kay Downes said. “This new system creates a community of learners by sharing ideas by reading one book.”

In the past, summer reading assignments were particular to each class. The new policy encourages students to read for pleasure.

A committee of teachers and administrators read various books that were possible options.

“We decided on Hunger Games because we wanted to assign a book that was enjoyable and not like a textbook,” Downes said. “We wanted to choose a book that you couldn’t put down after starting it.”

Students enrolled in AP or honors classes are still required to read summer assignments along with reading the Hunger Games.

The book can be purchased at http://www.akjbookclub.net/hungergames2.html at a discounted price. The books will arrive before the end of the school year.
