This year 15 students have been accepted into Virginia Governor’s School for various disciplines. The long, exhaustive application process has finally come to a close and yields exciting results for these select students.
Every year rising juniors and seniors can send in applications to the summer Governor’s School Program in a certain discipline; either Visual and Performing Arts, Agriculture, Math and Science Technology, Foreign Language or Humanities. If a student is accepted, he or she gets the unique opportunity to spend about a month living on a college campus and learn about their chosen field firsthand. The program is free of charge.
For many, the short time at Governor’s School can have a big impact, not only for the lessons learned in the classroom, but also for the people they meet and the experiences they have.
Junior Jessica Hiemstra was accepted to the Visual and Performing Arts school.
“The application process was not bad,” Hiemstra said. “The wait was not stressful at all. I mean yes, I was anxious to find out if I made it or not, but I am someone who keeps myself busy with things I love.”
Junior Joe Kisiday said he was surprised when he was accepted to the Visual and Performing Arts school.
“I was flabbergasted,” Kisiday said.
