Ban On Yoga Pants?

Yoga pants have become a style trend in many schools in Fairfax County and other areas. They are comfortable like sweatpants and are perfect for working out. Word has spread about these pants being banned and many students are taking a stand.

Despite all the good things about the yoga pants, some schools are in the process, or have already, banned them. Battlefield High School in Haymarket, VA banned students from wearing yoga pants because they were “too form-fitting”. If any student continued wearing them, they were given school issued shorts to change into or were sent home if they refused to change.

“I think it is funny that any school would ban something like yoga pants. Girls are covered and are not revealing anything. All they really do is give girls ‘yoga butts’.” Junior Brittany Jones said.

Many fought to wear the comfortable yoga pants but were unable to stop the ban. A group of students even came together on Facebook and formed a Yoga Pants Day, where everyone would wear their yoga pants with pride. As a result, the school administrators were not able to send home all girls so they would have to allow it.

When told that the comfortable yoga pants are inappropriate for school, girls would argue with the administrators and say that yoga pants are no different than skinny jeans, therefore they are considered appropriate.

“I don’t like the ban at all. It is not fair because they are not just for show. The pants are comfortable and we should be able to be comfortable when we are at school.” Sophomore Deanna Sixbey said.

Students at Robinson Secondary School made a news segment on April 12 about people’s reactions to the rumor of yoga pants being banned. Most students agree that the pants are appropriate and the administrators should address the short shorts and dresses that some girls choose to wear to school that are more inappropriate.

As rumor spreads that other schools are considering whether to ban skinny jeans as well, many hope that this does not happen. In hearing this, parents wonder what their children will be wearing to school now without those options. All students would dread to see uniforms as the final decision.

It appears that this so called yoga pants ban will remain a rumor. Time has passed since the comfortable pants were first addressed and nothing has happened. Girls continue wearing their yoga pants without being bothered by administrators.
