During the week of Homecoming, students show their school spirit by dressing differently each day.
This week is Homecoming week, which means that all of the planning that SGA has done to make spirit week possible is just about over.
Everyone around the school was encouraged to participate in order to get in the spirit for the Homecoming football game against Edison High School and attend the dance.
SGA has to come up with ideas every year about what they want for each spirit day. They get ideas from their teacher, Becky Campbell, and from a book, and collaborate as a class to brainstorm ideas.
“We know what other students would like,” senior Andrea Chavez said.
There is only one tradition for spirit week.
“The only traditional spirit day is the Blackout on the Friday of the homecoming game because the football team wears black jerseys for the game,” Campbell said.
SGA tries to come up with new ideas every year. This year they had an idea to do “little kid day.”
“So you can dress up in overalls and glasses or just anything reminiscing your childhood,” senior Samantha Small said.
Another idea that SGA had was “battle of the genders.” On this day they would ask the boys to wear blue and the girls to wear pink. Each gender would have to try to wear as much of their color as possible and the gender that wears the most of their color wins. However, this spirit day didn’t get accepted when SGA tried to get it approved.
Before the final spirit days are set, SGA has to make a visual presentation and present their ideas to the activities office and other members of the administration.
Along with the visual presentation, SGA has to describe to the administration what each spirit day would be and what they would be asking of the students. They have to be specific with their descriptions so that the administration understands and will not think that any student will ruin it by wearing something inappropriate.
Because of the difficulty of getting ideas approved, SGA always has back up ideas that they know will get approved.
“We use ideas from past years because it’s really hard to get different ideas approved,” Chavez said.
SGA does not just have to work hard coming up with ideas and getting them approved. Once the ideas are approved, they also have to work hard getting word out to their fellow students. To advertise when the spirit days are, as well as what they are, SGA has to create banners and flyers.
Another way that they get word out to students is through cafeteria announcements and the fashion show that they had on the Thursday before spirit week. On that day, SGA dressed as students would on a particular spirit day to give ideas about what to wear. This was a way for them to get students involved and excited for spirit week and Homecoming.
