Disconnected from the virtual world

“Well, I don’t have a Twitter because I don’t think people really care about what I do,” freshman Ryan Mowery said. “But with Facebook, I can talk to my friends and look at pictures, and see what’s going on.”

Though Twitter is mainly used for blogging, it has recently gained popularity because of the humor and irony people tweet about.

“It’s fun to read Twitter because people always blog about random things,” senior Roni Chang said. “I usually get a new tweet or someone tweeting something like every ten minutes.”

Despite the growing numbers in activity in social networking sites, there are some students who do not use Facebook, or any other social networking sites.

“I don’t have a Facebook, but I don’t feel like I’m being left out,” freshman Vishal Giri said. “I still have my phone, and I think I’ll eventually get a Facebook.”

Other times, students feel they should deactivate their Facebooks.

“I deactivated my Facebook this year because I had to focus on my schoolwork and because [Michael Gagne] told me about the gay porn spamming over my wall, but I didn’t believe it until I actually saw all of it,” senior Brian Mitchual said. “It was hard when I deactivated my Facebook because I was on it a lot.”

Many students recently just made a Facebook; in the past, they were not allowed to have one or because it was too distracting.

“I just got a Facebook sometime last year, my junior year,” senior Ryan Perkins said. “It didn’t feel that left out not having one, but it’s definitely different now that I have one. I can communicate with my friends easier.”
