It is the end of a series of dramatic natural disasters, the end of Amy Winehouse, the end of Steve Jobs and the end of the last full year of high school for the class of 2012. It is the end of 2011.

There are some high expectations for this year. For example, much-anticipated movies like “The Hunger Games” and “The Dark Knight Rises” are headed to theaters, the next presidential election occurs on Nov. 6, the 2012 Summer Olympics will be hosted in London and, supposedly, the world is going end on Dec. 21.

Some students said they are not looking forward to some of the events of 2012. Instead, they are more focused on events in their personal lives.

“I am looking forward to graduating this year,” senior Claire Hargrave said. “I am so done with school.”

Sophomore Eric Ransom is also excited about the end of the school year.

“I am looking forward to becoming a junior,” Ransom said. “Being a sophomore sucks.”

Photography teacher Betty Simmons said she is more concerned with worldly events as opposed to the end of the school year. Simmons said she is worried about the upcoming presidential election; for her, the race for the president will force her to make a tough decision.

“I’ve been worried about politicians for a long time,” Simmons said. “I think politicians make a lot of promises they can’t keep. I usually choose the person that will be the smallest problem.”

Ransom takes a different approach on who to vote for in the election, even though he will not be able to vote this year.

“I would vote for the Republicans,” Ransom said.

Ransom also has a strict point of view on the predicted end of the world by the Mayan calendar.

“It’s fake,” Ransom said. “I’m a Christian, so I don’t believe that we will know when the world ends.”

Hargrave agrees that the world is not going to end this year.

“I think it’s funny,” Hargrave said. “It’s not going to happen, but I’ll give someone a million dollars if it does.”

Simmons is using the prediction as an opportunity to improve her lifestyle.

“Sometimes I don’t live life to the fullest, and I really want to do that,” Simmons said. “I don’t think the world’s going to end, but it’s a nice excuse to make a change in my life.”
