In the past few years, the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area has experienced severe winter weather that varies drastically between intolerable heat waves and sub-zero temperatures. Last year, the area was hit with two blizzards that had devastating effects as the result of unpreparedness of both residents and officials.

The first few days were bliss. Every morning was pancake morning, and playing in the snow was the most strenuous action students had to take. As the week started waning, however, and teachers sent out multiple emails with work to do, the quickly-piling-up workload combined with sheer boredom induced a kind of restlessness- part happiness for a two-week break, and part longing to get out of the house.

Fairfax County Public Schools shut down from Feb. 5-15 due to the snow storm which began on Feb. 5. The ‘winter break round two,’ as some students refer to the 7 consecutive snow days as, was appreciated by both students and teachers.

With a record snowfall for Washington D.C. of over 24 inches in two days, snow has become more than pretty scenery and an excuse for a day off of school.
