New England Patriots vs. New York Jets Preview
Last Sunday, Wilson and the Jets were defeated 19-14 by the Carolina Panthers. In his debut, the rookie quarterback finished 20-37 for 258 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception, but the offense was hampered by the absence of a running game, rendering New York one-dimensional. Wilson was sacked six times in the defeat, and the Jets gained just 45 yards on the ground.
On defense, the Jets gave up 187 yards from scrimmage to Panthers standout Christian McCaffrey, but they stood strong on third down, allowing just four first downs in 14 tries. New York is focusing on bolstering its defense under the guidance of new head coach Robert Saleh.
“Offenses who can produce an explosive play in a drive have stratospheric scoring percentages,” Saleh said. “It’s virtually a foregone conclusion that they’ll earn three points. You may as well put seven on the board and kick the ball off with two bombs in a drive. So the goal is to make them work for it.”
Jones will be making his second start against the Jets’ ferocious defense, but New York isn’t going to ignore the Alabama native.
Jones is “way better than I expected,” according to Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich. “You’re expecting to see a young, rookie quarterback make unskilled mistakes. However, you didn’t see much of it. I believe he has exceptional talent and poise.”
Jones had a strong debut, completing 29 of 39 passes for 281 yards and a score in the Patriots’ 17-16 defeat to the Miami Dolphins last weekend. The Patriots committed eight penalties for 84 yards, which made it difficult for Bill Belichick’s team to establish a rhythm.
Despite the defeat, New England had a strong defense, allowing just 259 total yards and 74 yards on the ground.
Here’s a look at both teams’ injury reports going into the game:
Patriots:
- K Quinn Nordin, Abdomen, LB, is out. Throat specialist Kyle Van Noy
- T Trent Brown (calf), T Yodny Cajuste (hamstring), LB Ronnie Perkins (shoulder), TE Jonnu Smith (hip) are all questionable.
Jets:
- LB Ankle Jamien Sherwood, Jamien Sherwood, Jamien Sherwood, Jamien She
- WR Keelan Cole (knee), WR Jamison Crowder (groin), OL Chuma Edoga (non-Covid), CB Isaiah Dunn (shoulder) are all questionable.
